Morning Madness

4/21/2015

The city slowly begins to awaken. Darkness still pervades and the lights cast their ever present glow on the city. The river is quiet; hardly a ripple. Then the water breaks as the paddlers begin, ever so gently breaking the calm of the water. Sometimes it is very quiet; sometimes there are exchanges and laughter. They paddle on toward the Old Spaghetti Factory, often seeing a beaver duck back into the water. The darkness begins to lift as dawn makes herself known. The boat crosses to the other side to look ashore, hoping to catch a glimpse of the deer as they greet the day. On occasion, they stop to look at us as we pause to admire them.

On the way back, the sun brightens the sky with shades of pink and gold. The lights of the city are replaced by sun casting its light upon the buildings, reflecting their grandeur. Reflections in the water are mesmerizing and captivating. The beauty of what we see is priceless.

Yes indeed it is PRICELESS… this is MORNING MADNESS! The season has begun and we would like to invite you to come and experience this for yourself. All are welcome. This is open recreational paddling. You can work as hard or as easy as you want. This is how it works:

I keep an email list of interested people and on Mondays and Wednesdays, I send out an email for the following day. If you are interested you are asked to respond by 5 PM that day with a "YES." If you are NOT interested, do nothing. If we have enough paddlers by 6 PM, I will send out an email that says "MORNING MADNESS IS A GO GO." You are ONLY committed if you have said "YES" in an email as we are counting on you to have enough. If you have not responded but decide later that evening (OR the next morning!) you can still come. You can come as you wish, there is no "commitment" other than if you have replied "YES" then we need you to be there. REMEMBER: ONLY "YESES" NEED REPLY.

Morning Madness is on Tuesday and Thursday mornings 6-7 AM. We meet at 5:45 AM by the flagpoles in front of the RiverPlace Hotel. If you are a newcomer, then a waiver form must be filled out. (They are available online at or are available at the dock.) Newcomers can "try it out" by paddling for free for the first 3 times. If they continue to paddle, then newcomers must join DragonSports USA (a $40.00 lifetime fee). The open practice fee is $2/paddle (or $10/month; $25/quarter). There are life vests and paddles available.

Other advantages: the traffic is light; there is free parking on the streets until 8 AM; Little River Café opens at 7 AM and coffee and muffins are especially good at that hour. When you get to work, you’ll have a spring in your step. If you’re lucky enough to go home, you’ll still have a lot of your day left.

We hope you will take the opportunity this season to experience this for yourself. Who knows you might just fall in love with it as some of us have. You are MOST welcome to join us! If you think you might be interested, send an email to morningmadness14@yahoo.com to be added to the list.
